IMPA will host live streams and webinars during National Mathematics Week.

Celebrate Mathematics without leaving home! It is with this spirit that IMPA is promoting a series of online activities from May Wednesdays to 8th to celebrate National Mathematics Day (May Fridays). Due to social isolation measures because of the new coronavirus, the institute will use its social media to mark the date and disseminate topics related to mathematics and science. The #NationalMathematicsWeek will feature live streams with researchers from different areas and the webinar "Mathematics in Times of Crisis" .
From Monday (4) to Thursday (7), you can follow the live streams on IMPA's Instagram profile , which will always take place at 3 pm. Opening the activities, Carolina Araujo, IMPA researcher, talks with geneticist Hugo Aguilaniu, CEO of the Serrapilheira Institute, about the role of basic science.

The COVID-19 pandemic will be the topic of conversation between the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, and the biologist and science communicator Atila Iamarino. They will discuss the importance of science and mathematics in the fight against COVID-19.
The "Open Mathematics Book" project, which collaboratively creates collections of textbooks in the field for Basic Education under an open license (Creative Commons), is the subject of a conversation between Professor Humberto Bortolossi from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and Fabio Simas, director of the School of Mathematics at UNIRIO and one of the creators of the "Open Book".
For enthusiasts of scientific competitions, it's worth watching the live stream with the general coordinator of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM), Carlos Gustavo Tamm, better known as "Gugu," and Samuel Barbosa, a professor at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) who leads teams in international tournaments such as the Romanian Master of Mathematics (RMM). They will share stories from the OBM and discuss the mathematics of the Olympiads.
Moderated by science journalist Sabine Righetti, coordinator of Agência Bori, the webinar “Mathematics in Times of Crisis” will address the applications of science in complicated moments in history. Mathematician Tiago Pereira, from ICMC-USP, will discuss the models developed by researchers in the field for Covid-19; IMPA researcher Luciano Irineu will comment on the use of mathematical tools in the biggest economic crises in history; and Marcelo Viana will give an overview of advances in computing during World War II. The webinar concludes the #NationalMathematicsWeek program on May 8th at 11 am.
