IMPA welcomes over 150 people to two workshops.

Crowded hallways, accents from various countries and regions of Brazil. January has arrived and IMPA is already experiencing the lively routine of the Summer Program. To further energize the institute, two workshops are being held: “Mathematics of Machine Learning” and “Hyperbolic Manifolds, Their Submanifolds and Fundamental Groups”. Organized by IMPA researcher Augusto Gerolin, the “Mathematics of Machine Learning” event began this Monday (6) and will run until February 7. Inspired by a teaching format already established by the University of Genoa (Italy), the workshop features 8 hours of classes per week and promotes the development of theoretical issues at the interface between mathematics and computer science. For the first time at IMPA, the meeting has only speakers from the University of Genoa and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the United States. With 44 registered participants, the workshop is especially aimed at master's and doctoral students who are participating in the IMPA Summer Program. Topics such as theory and regularization of statistical learning and optimization for machine learning are being covered. Gerolin sees one of the workshop's distinguishing features as the speed with which deep and technical topics in the field are discussed. “We were able to discuss very profound mathematical problems in Machine Learning theory in a very short space of time. We were able to get to very technical problems, to very important questions in the mathematical part of Machine Learning very quickly,” explained the researcher. The mathematician shares the organization of the event with researchers Roberto Imbuzeiro (IMPA) and Lorenzo Rosasco (MIT and University of Genoa). Hyperbolic Manifolds, Their Submanifolds and Fundamental Groups Between January 6 and 10, IMPA is promoting the workshop “Hyperbolic Manifolds, Their Submanifolds and Fundamental Groups”, which has 105 registered participants. The event was born from a partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute in the United States and the National Science Foundation (NSF), also in the United States. In addition to this week's program, the workshop will also include an extension for further exploration of the topic between January 13th and 17th. The workshop aims to address recent developments in hyperbolic geometry and hyperbolic group theory. IMPA researcher Mikhail Belolipetsky—and organizer of the event—highlights that one of the main ideas “is to provide a meaningful opportunity for experts and young researchers to learn about new developments in the theory of high-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds and groups in an environment that fosters international collaborations that will drive future advances.” Nara Paiva, a doctoral student at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), is one of the workshop participants. For her, this is an opportunity to consider the continuation of her research. “My expectations are high because the workshop is very much related to what I study, and I intend to broaden my perspective on future research. This workshop will likely connect with things I would like to continue studying.” Laura Daniela, from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), is a doctoral student of one of the event organizers, Plinio Murillo. For her, the immersion will be important to begin developing her doctoral research. “The lectures this week are very much related to what I study. The topics are in my field, which will help me see other possibilities.” In addition to Belolipetsky, Alan Reid (Rice University), Matthew Stover (Temple University), Plinio Murillo (Federal Fluminense University), and Stefano Francaviglia (University of Bologna) make up the organizing team.
