'IMPA Summer' brings together more than 400 participants.

Summer has arrived in full force in Rio de Janeiro. At IMPA, in addition to the high temperatures, the season has brought with it a lot of mathematics and scientific research. The traditional "Summer School" began on January 6th and has 433 registered participants in 2025. The program, which has existed since 1968, brings together students, researchers, and professors from all over the world for two months of activities—which, this year, will run until February 28th. The Summer classes are free and promote in-depth study of mathematics and academic exchanges between students and researchers. This edition offers two undergraduate research courses, nine master's courses, eight doctoral courses, as well as eleven seminars and six mini-courses. Check out the complete program here . Martina Verdejo, from the Federico Santa María Technical University in Chile, is one of 80 international students, mostly from Latin American countries, who arrived in Rio de Janeiro for the “Summer at IMPA” program. The young woman highlights the opportunities for development in mathematics offered by the initiative and the female representation among the course participants. “I believe this is a great experience for those of us pursuing mathematics degrees and for those who would like to learn more about this area. I really appreciate that this opportunity is given to women. It has been a very rewarding experience.” Read more: IMPA Tech releases list of those selected for the 2nd phaseFolha: 'You weren't expecting this!' French mathematician Robert Moussu dies Sebastián Mantilla is also part of the group of international students enrolled in the Summer program. For the first time at the institute, the student from the Konrad Lorenz University Foundation in Colombia understands that the experience at IMPA is important for deepening his studies in mathematics. “My expectations regarding these classes are precisely to strengthen the demonstrative part, the strong mathematics. And, in addition, to take advantage of the environment with all the people who are here studying mathematics.” IMPA graduate students also have confirmed their presence in the Summer program. Mahmut Telles is a doctoral student at the institute and is participating in the Summer program for the third time. In this edition, he chose a course outside his research area. “This summer I decided to do something different. As I am from pure mathematics, I normally take courses in algebra, geometry, and analysis. But, this summer, I decided to take Machine Learning and it's been a really cool experience to have contact with this new area.” IMPA Tech students also have confirmed their participation in the Summer program . Undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Mathematics of Technology and Innovation are participating as voluntary auditors on Tuesdays and Thursdays, a period without activities at Porto Maravalley. In addition, the Summer program is offering an English course for undergraduates. Henrique Assis, a student at IMPA Tech, chose the Real Analysis course and has been thoroughly enjoying the Summer School, an event he had been eagerly anticipating. “It’s been a really fun experience, which I’m enjoying a lot. Summer is a time I always like because it’s a time when you’re studying, but you also feel like it’s a party or vacation time.” Read also: 10th Pro-Olympic Games: registrations open until February 5th.
