Mikhail Verbitskiy has left Armenia and is safe
Russian mathematician Mikhail Verbitskiy, a researcher at IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), left Armenia on Tuesday (16) and is now safe. He had been detained on Friday (12) at Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan based on a Russian wanted list for politically motivated charges.
The researcher sent a message thanking his colleagues and the scientific community for their support. “I’m finally safe! The last few days have been a real roller coaster. As of today, I am free and safe outside of Armenia,” he says Verbitski.
A member of the IMPA faculty since 2017, Verbitskiy is an internationally renowned mathematician who has made fundamental contributions to complex geometry and hyper-Kähler varieties. In Brazil, he plays a vital role in training new scientists and advancing excellence in mathematical research.
