IMPA promotes webinar 'Mathematics for Businesses'

Fundamental to so many things around us, mathematics is one of those disciplines that evokes passions or nightmares. And for this reason, its importance in the development of new technologies, economic systems, or advancements in other fields, such as medicine, often goes unnoticed. International Mathematics Day , celebrated on March 1Wednesdays, was created by UNESCO in 2019 to showcase the versatility of this science .

To celebrate the date, IMPA is promoting the webinar "Mathematics for Companies" this Monday (15), at 11 am, on the institute's YouTube channel . The idea is to show how mathematical solutions can solve different problems in the business sphere. Participating in this conversation are IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana , researcher Paulo Orenstein (IMPA) and mathematician Claudia Sagastizábal , from the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at Unicamp, and researcher at CeMEAI (Center for Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry) .

Bringing the knowledge produced by IMPA closer to the productive sector is one of the institute's goals, which since last year has intensified its contact with companies through the 1st Mathematics and Industry Workshop . To expand its reach, Viana decided to invest in the creation of an Innovation Center to solve concrete problems. In the webinar, he will provide examples of how the institute can contribute to the development of companies.

Orenstein, an associate researcher at the Innovation Center, will share his experience and that of IMPA students involved in solving a problem proposed by the fintech company Stone . He will also provide examples from his time as a doctoral student at Stanford University (USA), when he worked for Google and Facebook.

With extensive experience in collaborations with the productive sector, Claudia Sagastizábal will present industrial mathematics, its social impact, and possible ways to learn to think like an industrial mathematician. The researcher will participate, at the end of March, in the Workshop on Mathematical Solutions for Industrial Problems , promoted by CeMEAI with support from IMPA.

Broadcast via IMPA's YouTube channel , the webinar is open to all audiences and aims to demonstrate, in accessible language, the possibilities of applying mathematics in various sectors. Don't miss it!
