IMPA postdoctoral researcher participates in event in France.

Postdoctoral researcher at Visgraf (IMPA's Computer Graphics Laboratory) Tiago Novello traveled to Paris, France, to participate in the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) , one of the leading international events in the field. This year's edition began on Monday (2) and runs until Friday (6). Novello will give his presentation this Thursday (5).

Titled “Neural Implicit Surface Evolution” , the project was carried out in partnership with Vinicius da Silva (PUC-Rio), Guilherme Schardong (U Coimbra), Luiz Schirmer (Unisinos), under the guidance of IMPA researcher Luiz Velho and professor from the Department of Informatics at PUC-Rio, Hélio Lopes.

This work investigates the use of neural networks to "animate" implicit surfaces using differential equations. To do this, it extends the representation of implicit neural surfaces to spacetime, which opens up mechanisms for continuous geometric transformations.

“In 2021, we began analyzing works that used neural networks to represent surfaces in a continuous manner. This work that I will present proposes a generalization of this representation to animate such neural surfaces .”

Tiago revealed that he is excited to participate in the conference and that it will be the first time he presents a paper internationally in person. “ It’s the first time I’ll be presenting a paper at a conference of this size, with so many people, and in person. I’ve presented at other smaller international conferences. There are papers from various parts of the world that I follow and they will be there, so I’m excited and very curious about the event.” He also states that participating in events like this generates visibility for the research and work produced.

In addition to the presentation of papers, the conference also features a program with workshops, lectures, and short courses. Dora Sadigh, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford (California, USA) and Pushmeet Kohli, VP of research at Google DeepMind, are the keynote speakers at this year's ICCV.

Born in the city of Tuneiras do Oeste (PR), in northwestern Paraná state, Novello completed his undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the State Faculty of Sciences and Letters of Campo Mourão (Fecilcam), 60 km from his home. Afterwards, the mathematician moved to Maceió to begin his master's degree at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL). Following his time in the Northeast, he came to Rio de Janeiro, where he began his doctoral studies at PUC-Rio. At the invitation of IMPA researcher Luiz Velho, Novello has been part of the Visgraf team since February 2019, when he began his postdoctoral research at the institute.

“I’m from the interior of Paraná, so when I arrived in Rio de Janeiro, I already found everything unbelievable. Now I’m going to present my work in Paris, I never imagined that,” he said.

The postdoctoral researcher also highlighted his hope for the impact the work could have at the event. “The scale of this event is very large; more than nine thousand papers were submitted. I believe that after presenting the work, people will also start following the topic, mainly because being at the ICCV generates a lot of visibility.”
