IMPA plants more than 5,500 seedlings of the Atlantic Forest.

The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) has begun planting 5,529 native seedlings of the Atlantic Forest on the land where it is building its new sustainable campus in Jardim Botânico. In the first week of work, more than 200 seedlings have already been planted.

This action is part of a compensatory measure for the construction of the building. In the first phase, which began in May, 2,000 saplings of Brazilwood, Juçara palm, Jequitibá, Golden Ipê, among others, are being planted. The work is taking place in an area of 40,000 m², within the 251,824.72 m² plot of land.

With the compensation, there will be forest enrichment, due to the removal of exotic species (jackfruit trees) and the planting of various native species, which will contribute to the proliferation of the diversity of fauna and flora. In a short time, the land will have more than ten times the number of native Atlantic Forest trees compared to before the intervention.

New Sustainable Campus of IMPA

Established in 1981 in Horto, within the Botanical Garden, IMPA has greatly expanded its scientific and educational activities in recent years, making the expansion of its campus necessary to continue contributing to society. With the donation of the land adjacent to its current headquarters, the Institute chose a project entirely conceived to solve environmental problems, from lighter materials with low construction impact to the rational use of water and energy efficiency management. The architectural proposal won the most important international competition for sustainable architecture projects, the 2017 Recognition Award from the Lafarge Holcim Foundation in Switzerland.

IMPA is competing for the Faz Diferença Award , from the newspaper O Globo in partnership with the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan), for the start of construction of its sustainable campus. In its 19th edition, the initiative honors Brazilians and institutions that, in 2021, served as inspiration for their work and dedication. The winners will be determined by votes from a jury composed of journalists and 2020 winners, and the public. Click here to vote.
