Scattered across the four corners of the world, innovative and successful communication experiences for disseminating mathematics will be concentrated, starting this Wednesday (5), in Montevideo, Uruguay, at the Imaginary 2018 Conference. And the future in the area, to be outlined over the four days of the meeting, will have the participation of Visgraf, the Computer Graphics Laboratory of IMPA.
The work “Live Coding, hands-on workshop”, developed by Visgraf researchers Vitor Rolla, Ezequiel Soto and Pedro Souza, is part of the event's program, an interdisciplinary meeting of mathematicians, communicators and professionals interested in discussing and working collaboratively on modern initiatives on communication and knowledge transfer in mathematics.

Organized by Imaginary, a German non-profit organization created for the communication of mathematics, this year's edition of the popular conference adopts a participatory approach of debate and presentation of results. Therefore, Visgraf has prepared a workshop on live coding, an artistic way of presenting mathematical knowledge.
“ Live coding (programming in real time in front of an audience) is a new type of artistic performance that is strongly linked to mathematics and computer science. Projecting the code to the audience allows for an understanding of the music and, for this reason, the act of coding live is a powerful tool for the learning process,” explains Vitor Rolla.

The workshop aims to introduce and train teachers, students, and researchers in mathematics and science in the practice of live coding, demonstrating how mathematical logic and the formal structures of computer algorithms can produce aesthetically pleasing music and sounds.
This is not the first time that IMPA and Imaginary have collaborated. Last year, some of the content available on the Imaginary platform was exhibited at theMathematics Festival , held by IMPA. Furthermore, the Holo-Math reality project, from the German organization, was part of the program of the International Congress of Mathematicians ( ICM 2018 ), the largest global gathering of mathematicians, organized by IMPA together with the International Mathematical Union (IMU), in August, in Rio de Janeiro.
