IMPA opens registration for teacher training.

High school math teachers from all over Brazil, how about dedicating a week at the beginning of 2019 to a free in-depth course? Created in 1990 by IMPA, the Professional Development Program for High School Math Teachers (PAPMEM) is held twice a year, in January and July, during the school break. The modules are independent.

In the first edition of 2019, classes will be held from January 21st to 25th, full-time (from 9 am to 5 pm), at IMPA and partner institutions throughout the country. The training has capacity for up to 150 teachers from the State of Rio de Janeiro at IMPA, and from 50 to 100 teachers in the approximately 70 multiplier centers installed in universities.

Registration is open until January 17th. Teachers from the State of Rio can register through this link . Other interested parties should consult the PAPMEM coordinators in each state – see the contact list here .

The training covers selected topics from all three years of high school and themes from elementary school. It is divided into two types of activity: lectures in the morning, broadcast live via the internet from IMPA to the multiplier centers, using the infrastructure of the National Education and Research Network (RNP); and group work, carried out in the afternoon and supervised by teachers from each participating institution.

Created in 1990 by IMPA emeritus researcher Elon Lages Lima (1929-2017), PAPMEM has since benefited more than 20,000 teachers in Brazil.

The discussions within the program resulted in a series of books specifically aimed at high school teachers: “Coleção do Professor de Matemática” (Mathematics Teacher Collection) , published by the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM). They also gave rise to the books “A Matemática do Ensino Médio – volumes 1, 2 e 3” ( High School Mathematics – volumes 1, 2 and 3), published with support from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Rio de Janeiro Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ).
