IMPA Opens Registration for a Research Project with OpenAI

IMPA has opened registration for master’s and doctoral students interested in participating in a project by Centro Pi (IMPA’s Center for Projects and Innovation) developed in partnership with OpenAI. The initiative will investigate how research institutions can enable the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate scientific output in a sustainable, equitable, and researcher-centered manner. Applications for the project are open through September 4. Click here to access the form.

Up to six students will be selected to receive Level I master’s or doctoral-level technological development fellowships for the duration of the project. The activities are scheduled to take place between September 2026 and March 2027. View the announcement here.

The project is seeking candidates with two complementary profiles. The first is a technical role, aimed at students with programming proficiency, who will be able to work on the development of agents, harnesses, assessment tools, and other applications based on language models. The second is aimed at students with experience in mathematical research, as evidenced, for example, by publications, preprints or a thesis in progress, who are interested in using AI in mathematical research and evaluating its capabilities and limitations.

For the mathematical research position, programming skills and experience with artificial intelligence tools are considered a plus, but are not required. Experience with the Lean exam assistant will also be a plus for both positions.

Among the activities planned for the project are AI-assisted mathematical research, the development of tools and infrastructure for the use of large language models (LLMs), the formalization of results in the Lean exam assistant, as well as literature reviews, report writing, presentations, and participation in seminars.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form and may be sent until September 4 at 11:59 p.m. Brasília time. To participate, applicants must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in fields related to the project’s themes. Access the registration form here.

The selection process will be conducted by IMPA’s Commission on Technological Projects and Innovation (CPTI). Selection criteria include alignment with one of the project profiles, the quality and relevance of the candidate’s academic, scientific, or technical experience, motivation and alignment with the initiative’s objectives, as well as a track record in courses related to the relevant fields.

In the final selection of the team, preference will be given to candidates who are available to participate in person, although students who can only participate remotely may also be considered, depending on the pool of applications received. The evaluation will take place between September 5 and 11, and the results will be announced by September 14, via email or phone.

The project will be coordinated by project scientists Daniel Yukimura and Francisco Ganacim and by researcher João Pedro Ramos. Questions can be directed to centropi@impa.br .
