'IMPA Open Doors' showcases the wonders of Mathematics

Anyone who frequents the classrooms, auditoriums, and library of one of the world's leading mathematical research institutions already knows how challenging, wonderful, and fascinating mathematics is.

To share this sentiment and publicize the work done in an area fundamental to the country's development, the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics created "IMPA Open Doors".

The program is aimed at elementary school students and teachers, as well as others interested in learning about IMPA, which produces internationally renowned work, is home to acclaimed researchers, including Fields Medalist Artur Avila, and plays a significant role in teacher training and the dissemination of mathematics. Furthermore, it hosts the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP), the largest scientific competition in the country.

IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, highlights the importance of the initiative: “'Open Doors' is yet another IMPA initiative to bring the institute and mathematics closer to society as a whole and promote the dissemination of scientific culture. It organizes and integrates, into the regular functioning of the institute, activities that we have offered sporadically in recent years, always with excellent reception.”

The first edition of the visitor program will take place next week, on April 9th and 10th, from 9 am to 1 pm, at the institute's headquarters, a four-story building located a few minutes from the Botanical Garden and the Tijuca Forest, at Estrada Dona Castorina, 110.

The program includes a welcome chat with the director-general of IMPA, recreational activities such as origami workshops and games, lectures with researchers Eduardo Esteves (algebra), Diego Nehab (computer graphics), Harold Rosenberg (differential geometry), Hermano Frid (analysis and partial differential equations) and Vinícius Gripp (symplectic geometry), and film club sessions.
