IMPA launches book “Probability”; the book is aimed at post-graduate students

IMPA launched on Wednesday (20) the book Probability (1st edition), a new book aimed at advanced training in Probability for postgraduate students in Mathematics and related areas. Written by Bernardo N. B. de Lima and Leonardo T. Rolla, the book was produced as a solid reference for courses in the area, combining mathematical rigor, expository clarity and theoretical depth. The book is available at IMPA store for R$125.

The publication covers everything from fundamental concepts to advanced topics, such as the 0-1 laws of Kolmogorov and Hewitt-Savage, martingales in discrete time, convergence theorems and optional sampling, as well as introductions to Ergodic Theory and Large Deviation Theory. The concepts of Measure Theory are presented gradually, integrated into the development of the theory, allowing the reader to build a solid foundation for the rigorous study of Probability.

The result of decades of experience by the authors in teaching subjects such as Probability, Measurement and Integration, Stochastic Processes and Ergodic Theory at leading institutions in Brazil and abroad, the book combines theoretical depth with a constant concern for teaching. Reviews of prerequisites, detailed appendices and carefully prepared demonstrations are all part of the book’s pedagogical proposal.

The target audience includes students of Mathematics, Statistics and related areas, both those starting out in Probability and readers interested in deepening their knowledge of central and advanced topics in the discipline.

Bernardo N. B. de Lima is a full professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), holds a PhD in Mathematics from IMPA and did post-doctoral studies at the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam and at IMPA itself.

Leonardo T. Rolla is a full professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of São Paulo (USP). He holds a PhD in Mathematics from IMPA and did post-doctoral studies at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris, IMPA and USP. He has worked as a researcher at the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), in Argentina, and as a professor at the University of Warwick and New York University Shanghai.
