IMPA Issues Call for Applications for a Researcher Position and Offers a Postdoctoral Fellowship

IMPA currently has two open recruitment processes for mathematicians. The Institute is seeking a researcher specializing in pure, applied, or industrial mathematics and is also offering a postdoctoral fellowship open to all areas of mathematics. Job Opening in Mathematics with an Emphasis on Applied, Computational, and Industrial Mathematics

The selection process is open to researchers of any nationality, and applications from women and members of underrepresented groups in mathematics are encouraged. The position will initially be on a probationary basis, with the possibility of becoming permanent following an evaluation conducted over the first four years. The starting salary is R$ 28,299.60, which may be higher depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2026, through IMPA’s application system. Interested candidates must submit a cover letter, resume, list of publications, and work plan, and provide the names of at least three references. Letters of recommendation may be submitted by November 18. The selection results will be announced in December 2026, and the selected researcher is expected to begin their work between January and September 2027.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in MathematicsThe postdoctoral fellowship has an initial term of two years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, subject to an agreement between IMPA and the selected researcher. The stipend is R$9,000 per month, tax-free, in addition to an annual research grant of R$12,000 to cover academic travel and visits by researchers. Applications from women and members of underrepresented groups in mathematics are especially encouraged. This opportunity is open to researchers in all areas of mathematics—pure or applied—who have completed their Ph.D. within the last ten years or whose thesis defense is scheduled by August 2027. IMPA alumni are eligible provided they defended their doctoral thesis more than three years prior to the opening of the application period. The selected researcher will have autonomy to develop their research program and must teach at least one graduate-level course per year.

Applications may be submitted through November 15, 2026. Applicants must submit a research proposal, a resume, a list of publications, and the names of at least three researchers to provide letters of recommendation, which may be submitted through November 18. The selection results will be announced in December 2026, and the program is scheduled to begin between January and September 2027.
