IMPA inaugurates showcase of awards and accolades.

IMPA inaugurated this Monday (27) the “Showcase of Awards and Decorations” , a permanent exhibition located on the 2nd floor of IMPA’s headquarters, in Jardim Botânico. The exhibition brings together the main honors, including trophies, awards, diplomas and medals, won in the institute’s 72-year history. The inauguration ceremony was attended by IMPA’s Director-General, Marcelo Viana. “We are concerned with preserving the memory of an exceptional institution like IMPA. It is more than 70 years of history, of the development of mathematics in Brazil that we have to preserve for future generations. Now, with the opening of this showcase, we are taking another step, making accessible to all visitors, students, teachers, employees, the gallery of trophies and awards that IMPA has received from various institutions over time.” The exhibition curator and project creator, Suely Lima, Coordinator of Events and Scientific Activities at IMPA, explained that the process of assembling the display case involved selecting, cleaning, and organizing the materials. All the work—from the structure to the final finishing touches—was done internally by IMPA. The content research was conducted by historian Thaís Patrícia Mancilio and conservation and restoration fellows Tatiane Siqueira and Beatriz Araújo. “This project was driven by my doctoral thesis, which is about the history of IMPA. This project started when I entered Marcelo's [IMPA's director-general] office and saw that they were organizing to make a display case to put the awards. Why not put it in front of the auditorium and give everyone at IMPA access so that everyone can see it? I think it's very important for everyone at IMPA to know that each of us participated in these awards. Not directly, but indirectly, behind the scenes of the work here with the researchers,” said Suely.
