IMPA hosts the largest meeting of the mathematics community in the country.

The largest scientific gathering of the mathematical community in the country, the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM), will bring together approximately one thousand undergraduate and graduate students, as well as important Brazilian and foreign researchers, from July 29th to August 2nd, at the headquarters of IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) in Rio de Janeiro.

Held biennially since 1957 without interruption, the 32nd edition of the Brazilian Mathematical Congress (CBM) features an extensive program, including plenary and outreach lectures, introductory and advanced courses, thematic sessions, and poster presentations. Registration is still open.

During the event, three awards will be presented: the SBM Prize , the IMPA-SBM Journalism Prize , both on the afternoon of the 30th, at 2 pm and 4 pm respectively, and the Elon Lages Lima SBM/SBMAC Prize , on the 31st, at 4 pm.

Throughout the five days of the CBM, seven internationally renowned researchers, including American Douglas Arnold (Minnesota University) and Argentinian Alicia Dickenstein (University of Buenos Aires), vice-president of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), will give plenary lectures.

The program includes three outreach lectures: “Symplectic Dives and Number Theory,” by Vinícius Ramos (IMPA); “Control of Infectious Diseases by Isolation,” by Tiago Pereira da Silva (USP); and “Adventures with Triangles and Billiards,” by Dan S. Reznik (Upper West Soluções).

Daily, basic and advanced courses will be offered on current topics, such as "Rigidity in protein graphs," with Carlile Lavor (Unicamp). The specialist discusses the mathematics involved in calculating the 3D structure of a protein molecule, fundamental to solving problems in the development of new drugs.

In the course “A Mathematical Introduction to Blockchains”, researcher Augusto Teixeira (IMPA) will address basic cryptography and a decentralized currency design to illustrate the algorithm.

During the mornings, presentations will be divided into 12 thematic sessions, with space for discussions and exchange of information among the participants.

CBM activities will always begin at 9 am, Monday to Friday (July 29th to August 2nd), extending until 7 pm. Check the complete event schedule here .
