IMPA hosts computer graphics conference.

IMPA will host the computer graphics conference “LHF60++: Celebrating Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo’s 60th Birthday Again” on January 25th , in honor of the institute's researcher. The event is free and open to the public, with no registration required. The celebration will continue the meeting held last year in Natal (RN), which was unable to count on the researcher's presence.

“Important mathematicians, when they turn 60, are honored with a conference, and last year Luiz Henrique turned 60. We were going to have a parallel event to honor him within SIBGRAPI, but since he couldn't attend, we decided to hold a new meeting. This event will be a celebration of his work, bringing together exceptional people in an exceptional location. It's an opportunity for us to gather researchers and learn what everyone is doing. It's a way for us to communicate beyond social media,” explained IMPA researcher Luiz Velho, who will give a lecture at the event about the work Luiz Henrique has developed to date.

"I will address my personal view on his work and his career as a scientist," he concluded.

This year's event will feature an opening address by the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, a presentation by Waldemar Celes (PUC-Rio), a Round Table discussion on Visgraf (IMPA's Computer Graphics Laboratory), and lectures by researchers Luiz Velho (IMPA), Roberto Ierusalimschy (PUC-Rio), and José Ezequiel Soto Sánchez (ITAM), who will be coming from Mexico to participate in the meeting.

Lua programming language

Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo (Visgraf), Roberto Ierusalimschy (PUC-Rio), and Waldemar Celes (PUC-Rio), who will also be at the event, are responsible for developing the Lua programming language, used in industrial applications with an emphasis on embedded systems and games. Present in video games such as World of Warcraft and Angry Birds, the language was created in 1993 and has international relevance.

The trio was even honored last year with the Pedro Ernesto medal – the highest honor granted by the Rio de Janeiro City Council.

“The Lua programming language has an enormous global impact, which no other language outside the developed world has achieved. It’s really cool to know that what we did in Brazil is being used directly all over the world,” said Luiz Henrique.

The speaker was a student of Luiz Henrique.

One of the confirmed speakers at “LHF60++” is the Mexican researcher José Ezequiel Soto Sánchez , PhD from IMPA, supervised by Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo and co-supervised by Asla Medeiros e Sá (FGV EMap).

His doctoral thesis, "On periodic tilings with regular polygons ," defended in August 2020, was recognized as a "committee highlight" in the Odelar Leite Linhares Award , granted by SBMAC (Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics). The work also received the award for best doctoral thesis in computer graphics at SIBGRAPI 2021.

At the event, José Ezequiel will present the work: “Tiling with triangles and squares: origami and jumping methods”.

"It's a surprise that he comes from Mexico," Luiz Henrique concluded.
