IMPA conducts training course for teachers.

Rio de Janeiro Outubro de 2022 Olimpiadas Mirim OBMEP

The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) is holding, this Saturday (7), the first “Training Course for Elementary School Teachers I”, aimed at improving the teaching of mathematics in the initial grades. The initiative aims to train teachers and develop methodologies to improve student performance in the OBMEP Children's Olympiad, a scientific competition aimed at students from the 2nd to the 5th grade of Elementary School.

The project is the result of a partnership between IMPA and the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio), and has the support of B3 Social. “The initiative seeks to strengthen the role of teachers, promoting their protagonism in mathematics olympiads and, consequently, contributing to more accessible education. The proposal also aims to stimulate cooperative learning; promote social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge and strengthen student autonomy,” explains Adriana Pimenta, professor at UniRio and coordinator of the project.

The pilot edition brings together 30 teachers from the 2nd Regional Education Coordination of Rio de Janeiro. The professionals were selected by coordinator Carlos Eduardo Silva Jascone, a partner of OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools). The expectation is to expand the project to other states in the coming years.

Training with a practical and creative focus.

There are four in-person meetings at IMPA, where participants will have access to content such as algebra, geometry, measurements and order of magnitude, probability, and statistics. The activities will be developed in a workshop format, using questions from the Junior Olympiad as a basis for a practical and interactive approach.

The course focuses on creative methodologies that can be adapted to different school contexts, promoting dynamic, playful, and fun math education for children.

Registration is open for the Junior Olympics (OBMEP).

Registration for the 4th edition of the OBMEP Children's Olympiad is open until June 10th. Launched in 2022, the scientific competition is an OBMEP initiative for students in grades 2 through 5 of elementary school, from public and private schools.

Since its inception, more than ten million students have participated in the Olympiad. The scientific competition stimulates logical reasoning and curiosity through playful challenges, aiming to spark interest in mathematics from the earliest school years. The exams are designed according to the participants' age group and serve as an entry point into the world of scientific Olympiads. This year, the first and second phase exams will take place on August 26th and November 11th, respectively.

Organized by IMPA, the OBMEP Children's Olympiad has the support of B3 Social and is promoted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
