IMPA Releases Results of the OBMEP Exchange Program in China
On Friday (4), IMPA announced the final results of the selection process for the international exchange program in Zhejiang Province, China. Twenty-six national gold medalists from the 20th Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP) were selected—all of whom are students at public schools across Brazil. Check out the list of nominees here.
“This exchange represents an unprecedented initiative and a milestone for OBMEP. By exposing our young medalists to China’s mathematical and educational experience, we are creating concrete opportunities for boys and girls from all over Brazil to broaden their horizons, discover new ways of thinking, and realize that mathematics can open doors to the future. The ultimate result of this initiative will demonstrate the power of investing in the talent and education of our students,” says IMPA Director-General Marcelo Viana.
The two-week program, which combines academic, scientific, and cultural activities, will take place in late November and early December 2026. The initiative is organized by IMPA in partnership with the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education, which will host the Brazilian students during the exchange program.
The 26 spots were distributed among the country’s five regions: five for the North, seven for the Northeast, four for the Midwest, six for the Southeast, and four for the South. The selection process included group and individual interviews, as well as a review of documents and performance in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) or the OBMEP Mentors Program.
Expenses Covered by the Program
To make it possible for students to participate, IMPA will cover the expenses outlined in the program, such as airfare; lodging, meals, and local transportation in China; and international travel insurance. In addition, IMPA will provide participants with a free kit containing luggage and some clothing items for use during the trip.
The exchange program, a first-of-its-kind initiative by IMPA, offers an opportunity to broaden the educational experience of young OBMEP medalists, exposing Brazilian students to international academic and cultural experiences and strengthening educational cooperation between Brazil and China.
