IMPA and SBM launch national journalism award.

Driven by the desire to bring mathematics closer to society and expand scientific dissemination in the country, the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) created the IMPA-SBM Journalism Prize . The first edition will take place in 2018 and entries are open. Submit your work! REGISTER HERE!
The award is intended for reports that present Mathematics and Science in an interesting and original way, provoke reflection on these areas of knowledge, and encourage their popularization in Brazil. The distinction will be awarded in two categories: Mathematics and Scientific Dissemination.

Articles published in any media outlet – such as newspapers, magazines, online portals, blogs, television, etc. – that were published/broadcast between January 1, 2017, and May 15, 2018, are eligible to compete. Reports may highlight exemplary practices, talents, and innovations, as well as have an investigative character, pointing out problems to be solved. The judging will primarily consider the criteria of journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity, and quality of execution of the article.
Applications can be submitted from May 16 to June 25, 2018, exclusively through the website www.impa.br/premiodejornalismo .
The prizes will be identical in both categories, Mathematics and Science Communication: 10,000 reais and a trophy (winner); 3,000 reais and a diploma (2nd place); 2,000 reais and a diploma (3rd place). Up to two honorable mentions per category will receive diplomas.
The Judging Committee may propose an Hors-Concours award, in recognition of journalists or media outlets, not necessarily registered in the competition, that have made an exceptional contribution to the dissemination of Mathematics, Science and Technology. The winner will receive R$ 10,000 and a trophy.
The 2018 awards ceremony will be held on August 9th, during the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018) at Riocentro, Rio de Janeiro. The list of the five finalists in each category will be published on the IMPA and SBM websites and social media up to 15 days before the ceremony. The winners will only be announced during the ceremony.
