IMPA and IBM host Quantum Computing Workshop

The Workshop on Quantum Computing offered by IMPA in partnership with IBM Research Brazil ended this Thursday (22). The event took place over two days and included the participation of IBM researchers Rodrigo Neumann, Marco Barroca and Alan Duriez. Guilherme Temporão and Thiago Guerreiro, both from PUC-Rio, were also speakers.

As an open event, the Workshop was designed to welcome an audience of diverse educational levels, from undergraduate students to post-doctoral researchers. "The workshop was prepared with no background in quantum physics, and also minimal mathematics, requiring only basic linear algebra to handle vectors and whole numbers, so that all audiences could understand," said Duriez.

According to Duriez, the objective of the workshop in the first part, which took place on Wednesday (21), was to present basic concepts of quantum formation. The speakers sought to explain the theory while showing how students could apply it in practice using the Circuit Composer platform.

Temporão and Guerreiro, professors at PUC-Rio, gave more conceptual lectures in terms of the physical application of the concepts that had already been discussed.

At the end of the workshop, it was shown how to use the basic concepts of quantum formation to solve more realistic problems such as factoring large numbers.
