IMPA and FAPERJ promote a series of lectures with scientists.

The most fascinating and surprising aspects of mathematics will be unveiled during the "Lecture Series with Scientists and Young Scientists from Our State," which features presentations broadcast on IMPA's YouTube channel , always at 10 am, during the months of July and August. With accessible language, the initiative aims to facilitate access for the general public to the topics studied by the institute's researchers who are fellows of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ).

Entitled “Guess a number”, the first lesson in the series will be presented by IMPA researcher Roberto Imbuzeiro, this Tuesday (5). Imbuzeiro stated that it is a challenge to take cutting-edge mathematics and explain it in a way that anyone can understand. “This time, I will talk about a universal subject, which is lying! Or rather: how can you guess the number your friend is thinking of, by asking him questions, if he has the right to lie sometimes? Incredibly, this game has to do with important communication problems,” commented the researcher.

In the next lecture, it is Oliver Lorscheid's turn, also a researcher at IMPA, to talk about "Fun with prime numbers", on Thursday (7). Following that, researchers from the institute will also present: Mikhail Verbitskiy; MiKhail Solodov; Marcelo Viana; José Espinar; Felipe Linares; Jorge Vitorio Pereira; Hubert Lacoin; Hossein Movasati; Eduardo Esteves; Carlos Gustavo Moreira; Aloísio Araújo and Alfredo Iusem.

Researcher Jorge Vitorio states that the FAPERJ initiative allows for a closer relationship between academia and basic education students. "In my lecture, I will try to show that mathematics transcends formulas and connects with mundane issues, such as making a soccer ball, but also with fundamental questions, such as the orbits of the planets," he said.
