IMPA already has seven events planned for 2023.

32º Colóquio Brasileiro de Matemática

The year has begun, and it's time to prepare for the 2023 events. IMPA already has seven confirmed this year. The most anticipated is the 34th Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM), which will take place in person between July 24th and 28th. The last edition, in 2021, was held online due to the health restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting is the most comprehensive scientific gathering of the Brazilian mathematical community and has contributed significantly to the development and strengthening of science. Held every two years since 1957, the CBM (Brazilian Mathematical Congress) includes the participation of undergraduate and graduate students from all over the country, as well as Brazilian and foreign researchers.

Participantes do 1º Colóquio Brasileiro de Matemática, em 1957

The event, which usually brings together around 1,000 participants, had a modest beginning with the participation of 50 mathematicians from different states. The event was held between July 1st and 20th, 1957, at the Palace Hotel in Poços de Caldas (MG).

For this year, the LHF60++ event is also planned: Celebrating again the 60th Birthday of Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo – an IMPA researcher honored last year with the Pedro Ernesto medal . Alongside Roberto Ierusalimschy and Waldemar Celes, the IMPA researcher received the highest honor granted by the Rio de Janeiro City Council. The trio was responsible for creating, in 1993, the Lua programming language, which is used in industrial applications with an emphasis on embedded systems and games, such as the video games World of Warcraft and Andy Burd. The event to celebrate the researcher's 61st birthday is scheduled for January 25th at IMPA.

In February, the15th edition of Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry will take place , also discussing topics related to Number Theory, Coding Theory, and Foliation. The event will be held between February 6th and 10th at IMPA.

During the same period, the "Nordeste Dinâmico " event will take place in Alagoas. The event will celebrate the 50th birthday of IMPA researcher Carlos Gustavo Moreira. Gugu, as he is known, is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and a full member of the World Academy of Sciences.

Winner of several awards in recognition of his scientific contribution, such as the UMALCA, the researcher was a speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, the largest mathematics event in the world, and was recognized with the Order of Scientific Merit. He also won the Erdos Prize for his contribution to the Mathematical Olympiad.

For the month of July, the events schedule includes the Brazil-China Joint Mathematical Meeting , which will take place in Foz do Iguaçu from July 17th to 21st, and the XXVI School of Probability (EBP) from July 30th to August 5th. Also this month, IMPA will host the Workshop on Conservative Dynamics and Symplectic Geometry , which aims to bring together specialists in Conservative Dynamics and Symplectic Geometry from Brazil and abroad. As in the first eight editions of the meeting held at the institute, the program includes a reduced number of lectures, leaving ample time for discussions.
