ICM 2026: Three IMPA Researchers Are on the Program

IMPA researchers Robert Morris, Jorge Vitório Pereira (deputy director of the Institute), and Luna Lomonaco are among the speakers at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). From July 23 to 30, the world’s most important mathematics conference will bring together leading figures in the field in Philadelphia (U.S.) to present scientific advances. Among the event’s highlights is the announcement of the Fields Medal winners.

Morris was selected to give a Plenary Lecture – one of the conference’s highest honors, reserved for researchers whose work has had a major impact on contemporary mathematics. On July 29, the mathematician will present the lecture “Recent Results in Ramsey Theory,” highlighting advances in the field of combinatorics, including the result obtained at IMPA in 2023. During the institute’s Summer Program, Morris, alongside Marcelo Campos (IMPA), Simon Griffiths (PUC-Rio), and Julian Sahasrabudhe (Cambridge), developed a new algorithm that improved the upper bound of Ramsey’s Theorem. The breakthrough was considered the most significant since 1935.

On July 25, Pereira will give a Section Lecture with the talk “Holomorphic foliations with numerically trivial canonical bundle.” The presentation will address the structure of these foliations on projective varieties, bringing together recent advances and open questions.

“Participating in ICM 2026 is a recognition of the significance and maturity of research on holomorphic sheets on the international stage. It is a pleasure to be able to present this topic at such an important event,” he said.

Luna, meanwhile, will participate on July 24, in a Joint Section Lecture, with the talk “Algebraic Correspondences and Schwarz’s Reflections: Where Rational Dynamics Meets Kleinian Groups,” co-presented with Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The presentation will discuss connections between complex dynamics and Kleinian groups, as well as highlight applications and new directions for research.

“It is a great honor and an immense joy to have been invited as a speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The ICM is one of the most important events in the world of mathematics, and participating in it in this way is, for me, a very special recognition of the work I have been doing over the years,” she said.

Organized every four years by the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the ICM is considered the premier global forum for mathematics. In addition to scientific conferences, the congress also serves as the venue for the presentation of the field’s most prestigious awards. Among them is the Fields Medal, considered the Nobel Prize of mathematics. In 2014, IMPA researcher Artur Avila received the honor, becoming the first Brazilian and Latin American to win the prize.

IMPA also had the honor of hosting the event in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. This was the first time the event was held in the Southern Hemisphere. More than 5,000 people attended the conference.

The participation of the Institute’s three researchers in ICM 2026 reinforces IMPA’s presence on the international scientific stage and highlights the significance of the mathematical research conducted at the institute. At the last edition of the event, in 2022, four IMPA researchers were part of the program: Artur Avila, Carolina Araujo, Claudio Landim, and Hubert Lacoin.
