Hubert Lacoin participates in ABC symposium on Tuesday (13)
New affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), IMPA researcher Hubert Lacoin participates in the Thursdays Scientific Symposium of ABC Affiliated Members: Mathematical Sciences on Tuesday (13), at 4 pm. Broadcast on ABC's YouTube channel , the event will bring together four new ABC affiliated members to present their mathematical research on topics such as fluid behavior, partial differential equations and regularity theory, stable geometric structures and convergence to equilibrium of Markov chains.
In his lecture, Lacoin will discuss the convergence to equilibrium of Markov chains, or, in simpler terms: the mathematics of shuffling. “It may seem very abstract, but it isn't. A good illustrative example is a deck of cards being shuffled. In my lecture, I will try to define the terms of the question 'how many times do you need to shuffle the cards?', and explain how we can anticipate answers to it,” he explains.

The other new members of the ABC, Adriana Neumann de Oliveira (UFRGS), Edgard Almeida Pimentel (PUC-Rio), and Gregório Manoel da Silva Neto (Ufal), will also present their research topics. The symposium will be coordinated by Maria José Pacífico (UFRJ) and will also feature discussants Jaqueline Mesquita (UNB) and Ana Shirley Ferreira (UFC) da Silva.
The IMPA researcher reports being excited to learn about the research of his colleagues, who work in different areas of mathematics. “Normally, we have contact with researchers in the same specialty. Stepping outside of that specialization and engaging with a larger audience is a very healthy thing,” Lacoin points out.
The Symposium program is available on the ABC website . To obtain a certificate of participation, you must register at this link .
