'How to prepare a presentation?' is the topic of a live event by INCTMat and SBM.

The 5th roundtable discussion in the “Mathematics as a Profession” series will focus on preparing lectures. The event will take place on September 29th at 5:15 PM and is organized by the National Institute of Science and Technology of Mathematics (INCTMat ) in partnership with the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) and with support from IMPA. The meeting will be streamed via Zoom and will be available on the SBM YouTube channel . Questions about registration can be sent to inctmat@impa.br .

The "Mathematics as a Profession" series aims to provide professional development activities dedicated to the mathematics community. In this edition, the 5th roundtable features presentations by researchers Ana Silva, from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Ederson Moreira dos Santos, from the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICMC-USP), and Vinicius Ramos, from IMPA. The moderator is Keti Tenenblat, from the University of Brasília.

In this round table we will discuss how to prepare lectures and make presentations in an efficient and engaging way. Three mathematicians will share their experiences and reflect on the preparation process, and certainly offer some tips and advice ,” says Lorenzo Díaz, vice-coordinator of INCTMat.

Díaz also states that lectures and seminars are one of the main ways mathematicians communicate with the scientific community to discuss and disseminate their results. “Therefore, it is very important to deliver lectures effectively. A good lecture can open many doors. In my experience, lectures have been the starting point for scientific collaborations. Each lecture is, in a way, unique, as it must adapt to the target audience and specific objectives,” adds the vice-coordinator.

The joint activity of INCTMat with SBM offers an opportunity to combine efforts and continue the series of activities on professional development that began on November 6, 2020, when the first meeting addressed the preparation of research projects. Other roundtables addressed the evaluation of research projects, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the lives of Brazilian scientists, and the preparation of scientific articles. Some of these discussions are available on the INCTMat YouTube channel.

The president of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), Paolo Piccione (USP), states that in the roundtables, participants discuss various aspects of mathematical life and professional development activities in the field. " There is a critical and extremely important transition in the process during which a recent PhD becomes a professional researcher. The objective of these roundtables is to make the experience of more seasoned colleagues available to younger ones, and this will be achieved by discussing and presenting reflections on various aspects of mathematical life that are often not addressed during academic training," he declares.

Piccione also explains that the target audience for the activity is undergraduate and graduate students and young researchers, but the roundtables are open to the entire mathematics community. " The discussion topics planned for the series of roundtables include themes such as project and report writing, event organization, good academic practices, and teaching, among others," he points out.

INCTMat promotes the consolidation of Brazilian mathematics in both established centers and newer centers spreading throughout Brazil. The organization is coordinated by Jacob Palis (IMPA) and vice-coordinator Lorenzo Diaz (PUC-Rio), and maintains research groups in 21 development centers with the aim of expanding the frontiers of scientific research and encouraging the training of new mathematicians.

The main purposes of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) are to bring together mathematicians and mathematics teachers in Brazil, to encourage the undertaking and dissemination of high-level research, and to contribute to the improvement of mathematics teaching at all levels. Professional and academic development activities aim at the national development of the field of mathematics. The organization is coordinated by President Paolo Piccione (USP) and Vice-President Jaqueline Godoy Mesquita (UNB).

Registration and ticket distribution for the roundtable discussion are done through the INCTMat website . To participate via Zoom, simply register at this link.
