High-level mathematicians from IMPA teach a Summer Course.

Since the first working day of 2018, IMPA has been hosting students from all over Brazil and the world at its headquarters in the southern zone of Rio for the traditional Summer Course, which will take place until March 2nd.

During this period, the 404 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students already enrolled will have classes with high-level professors from IMPA, as well as visiting researchers. Registration, which is free, will be open until January 19th.

The Summer Course offers five undergraduate research courses (Analysis on the Real Line, 2D Computer Graphics, Introduction to Linear Algebra, Introduction to Mathematical Economics, and Introduction to Vibration and Wave Theory). One of the most traditional, the Analysis on the Real Line course holds the record for enrollment, with 171 students. In 2018, researcher Paulo Sad, from IMPA, will once again be teaching the course.

Master's students have access to a menu of seven courses: Markov Chains, Fundamental Groups and Covering Spaces, Introduction to Combinatorics, Introduction to Statistical Mechanics, Introduction to Number Theory, Non-Cooperative Game Theory, and Topics in Modular Forms and Elliptic Curves. All subjects are taught by IMPA researchers.

Doctoral students have ten courses available to them, including Functional Analysis, Algebraic Curves, Topics in Dynamical Systems, Introduction to Dispersive Equations, and Topics in Mathematical Economics.

In addition to regular courses, students can participate in 11 seminars on diverse topics – Algebra, Computer Graphics, Partial Differential Equations, Mathematical Physics, Holomorphic Foliations, Differential Geometry, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Mathematical Methods in Finance, Probability and Combinatorics, Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory – and eight mini-courses.

Most of the mini-courses are taught by visiting researchers from leading centers of mathematics worldwide, providing enrolled students with a valuable exchange of knowledge with renowned mathematicians.
