Gugu is honored at a dynamic systems event.

Encontro reúne pesquisadores em Maceió até sexta

IMPA researcher Carlos Gustavo Moreira, better known as Gugu, is being honored at a conference on dynamical systems, celebrating his 50th birthday. The"Nordeste Dinâmico" conference , taking place between February 6th and 10th in Maceió, brings together 16 speakers, including three former students of the researcher.

This is the first edition of the congress, although Brazil has a tradition of holding conferences on dynamical systems.

One of the members of the organizing committee is Davi Lima, from the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), who highlights the excitement about in-person events after the pandemic.

"The first edition of the event is honoring the 50th anniversary of mathematician Carlos Gustavo Moreira, who is known as Gugu. During the pandemic, we had a tough time, but now we are bringing together several researchers to honor this great Brazilian mathematician," he celebrated.

Among the speakers are researcher Luna Lomonaco, from IMPA, and researchers such as Alex Zamudio, from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), and Hugo Araújo, who were supervised by Gugu during their doctoral studies. He was also co-supervisor of Yuri Lima, who will also be presenting at the event. The complete program is available at this link.

At the conference, participants have the opportunity to interact with colleagues in the profession, stay up-to-date, and learn about new perspectives within the research field.

“I am very pleased with the list of speakers, because they are all top-notch mathematicians! Very well-established and highly prestigious in the field of dynamical systems. I think that, until the end of the congress, we will have lectures of an excellent scientific level, and I am also very excited about the social aspect, because it is a chance to see old friends again and learn about the research firsthand,” said Gugu.

A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Gugu is a specialist in dynamical systems, combinatorics, and Diophantine approximations. The IMPA researcher also has a history of participation in scientific competitions and was awarded gold medals at the Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiad in 1989 and at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1990.
