Geometry Seminar Brings Together International Researchers

Researchers and students gathered at IMPA throughout the week to participate in the seminar "Geometry, Arithmetic and Differential Equations of Periods" (GADEPs) . The event featured both remote and in-person lectures. According to IMPA researcher and seminar organizer Hossein Movasati, the idea behind the activity is to bring together mathematicians from different generations. "The seminar was created three years ago. With the hybrid model, different people can participate, and that's great. IMPA is a recognized institute, and being able to bring in international names to inspire young people and make them realize they can do that too is excellent."

Hosein also emphasizes that the goal is to continue the seminar in the coming years and encourage the exchange of knowledge among participants. “In the program, we included a free day so that participants wouldn't necessarily have to do math, but could enjoy themselves and exchange ideas. The objective is to mix this scientific aspect with some sightseeing and leisure activities, and consequently, produce mathematical work.”

The event brought together 15 researchers. Among them was Roberto Villaflor (PUC-Chile), who was a master's and doctoral student at IMPA.

“I had already given another lecture here in 2019, and now I participated in the seminar. Being able to come to IMPA is always a great pleasure, I feel at home, I know most of the people. Besides, I love Rio de Janeiro. I am very happy to return.”

Speaker Gregorio Baldi (IHES-France) participated in an event at IMPA for the first time. The Italian was delighted with the institute.

"It was my first time in South America. IMPA is incredible. I loved the institute and its beauty. Furthermore, Rio de Janeiro also has an excellent vibe ; I was able to meet some mathematician friends."

Gabriel Barruci, a doctoral student at UFRJ who attended the event, explains that he works with holomorphic foliations, which are also related to the seminar's theme. He noted that the online lecture by Adrian Clingher (University of Missouri-St. Louis) on " On K3 Surfaces with Lattice Polarization" was one of the most interesting.

"The seminar was excellent, the presentations were great. I managed to understand a lot, to be honest, I took a lot of notes and I'm going to study them when I get home. These are very complex topics and it takes time to understand all the connections that are made in the research."

Another participant in the seminar is Colombian Daniel Felipe Lopez Garcia, who holds a doctorate from IMPA and is currently doing postdoctoral research at USP. He said that it is always interesting to return to IMPA and that he was happy to see colleagues who worked with him during their doctorate giving lectures.

“This event is very important because this is a very interesting area of mathematics. The lectures that caught my attention the most were from speakers who also worked with me during my doctoral studies. I can see their evolution and I think it reflects on me; it's really cool to know that I can also occupy that space.”
