Bringing together leading figures in world mathematics, the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) could not fail to include IMPA researchers in its program. In total, four professors from the institution will present lectures and panels at the event, which will take place in a hybrid format between July 5 and 14. They are the deputy director and general coordinator of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP), Claudio Landim; and researchers Artur Avila , Carolina Araujo , and Hubert Lacoin .
Registration for ICM 2022, which runs until July 14, has already closed, but the lectures will be made available on the YouTube channel of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) shortly after the event concludes, according to the organizers.

Panels discuss representation in the field.
On the morning of this Friday (1st), Carolina Araujo led the opening ceremony of the second World Meeting of Women in Mathematics (WM)² , a satellite event of the ICM organized by the Committee for Women in Mathematics of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The researcher recalled the enthusiasm that dominated the atmosphere of the last edition of (WM)², which she coordinated.
“It was a powerful experience, a memorable day. There were about 350 of us gathered to honor and celebrate women in mathematics, and also to discuss challenges and pathways to gender equality in the field,” she said.

Later, from 1 PM to 3 PM, the panel “ Girls and Mathematics: reflections and initiatives ” will discuss initiatives aimed at attracting and supporting the presence of girls in the field and will honor the young Ukrainian Yuliia Zdanovska , a medalist at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), who died in March of this year during the war. The complete (WM)² program, which runs until tomorrow, is already available and registration can be done at this link . The program is being streamed on the (WM)² YouTube channel .
Carolina will also discuss gender issues in the panel “Best Practices Towards a More Diverse and Inclusive Mathematical Community” , which is part of the ICM program, on Friday (8). As vice-president of the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics, the researcher will talk about the growing emergence of collectives that aim to promote the inclusion of women in the area and the role of this type of organization at regional and continental levels.
Lectures on education and probability
Frenchman Hubert Lacoin will present, on Sunday (10), at 7:15 am, the lecture “Mixing time and cutoff for one dimensional particle systems”, moderated by Claudio Landim. An affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and winner of the Annales Prize from the Henri Poincaré Institute in 2012, Lacoin will address mixing times for one-dimensional systems, a topic he has been focusing on extensively in recent years in collaboration with colleagues from other universities.
In addition to moderating two other lectures in the Probability section, Landim, who had already debuted as a speaker at the Congress in 2018, will talk about the role of OBMEP in Brazilian education. His presentation is part of the panel " Innovation and New Ways of Popularizing Mathematics " and aims to detail the logistical challenges of the exam and encourage other countries to adopt the initiative.
On July 14th, the final day of the program, Artur Avila will moderate the plenary lecture “ Small denominators and multiplicative Jensen's formula ”, presented by Svetlana Jitomirskaya from the University of California. With a breathtaking program, ICM 2022 promises to thrill participants!
