Former minister Marco Antônio Raupp dies at age 83.

Former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Marco Antônio Raupp died this Saturday (24), at the age of 83. The family reported that the cause of death was acute respiratory failure, resulting from a brain tumor. A mathematician, physicist and computer scientist, he was director of the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC), of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and president of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB). Currently, he was the general director of the São José dos Campos Technological Park Association, which he helped to create and implement.
“Marco Antônio Raupp is a major figure in science and technology in Brazil, a renowned scientist and an exceptional manager. As minister, he played a prominent role in the Brazilian government's support for bringing the International Congress of Mathematicians to our country,” highlighted Marcelo Viana, director-general of IMPA.

The former minister earned a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Chicago. He was a tenured professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he served as an associate professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME). While directing INPE, he created the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC).
As Minister, in 2013, he created the Brazilian Industrial Research and Innovation Company (Embrapii) and was responsible for formulating and coordinating Brazilian space policy, a role he held in 2011 and 2012.
Throughout his career, he received important titles such as the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit from the Presidency of the Republic; Grand Officer of the Order of Aeronautical Merit, Brazilian Air Force/FAB; Grand Officer of the Order of Naval Merit, Brazilian Navy/Brasília; and the Peacekeeper Medal, Brazilian Army/EB.
"We have lost another admirable person, a great scientist and a humane manager, this time due to cancer," the LNCC reported in a statement.
