Former IMPA researcher Barry Rees James dies in the USA.

Former IMPA researcher Barry Rees James died at age 76 on March 31 in Duluth, Minnesota. The mathematician, who dedicated himself to the field of probability, taught at the institute until 1987, alongside his wife, Kang Ling James.

Born on April 28, 1942, in Pennsylvania (USA), James graduated in Mathematics from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1964, with a summa cum laude degree . In 1971, he received his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, where he met mathematician Kang Ling, whom he would marry the following year.

The two were researchers at IMPA until 1987, when they joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. There, James held various positions, including Head of Department and Director of Graduate Studies, until his retirement in 2016.

Barry James is survived by his wife, Kang Ling James, a brother, and a sister. The couple had no children.
