Faperj Cycle promotes lectures with IMPA researchers.

Mathematics can be challenging in many ways, but it can be demystified. The "Lecture Series with Scientists and Young Scientists from Our State," with presentations broadcast by… The IMPA YouTube channel , with lectures on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until the end of the year, proves the theory. The goal of the lectures is to provide the general public with access to the topics studied by the institute's researchers who are fellows of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (Faperj).

The first lesson in the series was presented by IMPA researcher Alejandro Kocsard, this Monday (23). With the theme “The equations of shadows” , the researcher explains the different projections that a single object can generate.

On Wednesday (25) it is Alexei Maylybaev's turn, coordinator of the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at IMPA, to talk about Turbulence. " Our group works with mathematical problems of hydrodynamic turbulence. This area is very important for practical applications, because turbulent flows in liquids and air are common, and our possibilities of predicting their dynamics are still very limited. Applications range, for example, from flows in pipes to weather forecasting. In the field of turbulence, many problems remain largely open. This refers to mathematical aspects, such as one of the Millennium problems which refers to the Navier-Stokes equations, as well as physical aspects – explaining multiscale properties of flows", explained Maylybaev .

Researchers from the institute Aloisio Araujo, André Nachibin, Carlos Gustavo Moreira, Hubert Lacoin, Jorge Vitório, Luiz Velho, Lucas Ambrozio, and the director-general of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, will also participate in the lecture series.

For Lucas Ambrozio, presenting his research project in an accessible way to high school students was challenging, but also "very interesting." " I made a video about a curious little problem involving pairs of points on a circle. I had to think to understand a particular and simplified case of one of my research problems. I hope I managed to make an accessible and intriguing video for this special audience, our future scientists from the state of Rio!"

The researcher also highlighted FAPERJ's investment in his research projects. " FAPERJ's support has been very important for my research projects, whether it has enabled me to purchase books and equipment, hire a postdoctoral researcher, or fund visits by speakers to discuss their discoveries."
