Competition to award R$36,000 in prizes

Applications for the 9th IMPA Journalism Award begin this Monday (18th). The initiative recognizes reports that transform Mathematics, Science and Technology into stories accessible to the public and will distribute R$ 36,000 in prizes.

Aimed at journalists from all over Brazil, the award is divided into two categories: Mathematics and Science Communication. Entries published between June 25, 2025 and June 19, 2026 in print, digital, television or radio outlets are eligible. Registration is open until June 19th.

Created in 2018, the IMPA Journalism Award aims to stimulate the production of quality reports that broaden society’s understanding of science and mathematics. The Mathematics category covers topics such as mathematics education, academic research and applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer graphics. The Science Outreach category brings together reports on different areas of science and their impacts.

The top three in each category will receive prizes of R$10,000, R$5,000 and R$3,000, as well as honorable mentions. The evaluation takes into account criteria such as journalistic relevance, originality, depth, clarity and quality of execution.

The awards ceremony will be held on August 29th in Rio de Janeiro, during the National Mathematics Festival, an event aimed at the general public that is part of IMPA’s scientific outreach activities through experiments, games, lectures, round tables and cultural activities.

Over the course of eight editions, the award has received more than 1,200 entries from professionals all over the country. In 2025, the winners were Luiz Felipe Fernandes Neves, in the Mathematics category, with the article “The mathematical beauty of fractals” (Jornal UFG), and Vinícius Sassine and Lalo de Almeida, in the Science Communication category, with “Climate Change in the Amazon” (Folha de S. Paulo).
