Competition to award R$36,000 in prizes

Journalists from all over Brazil can now get ready: the IMPA Journalism Award opens its new edition on May 18. The initiative recognizes reports that transform science and mathematics into stories that are accessible and relevant to the public. The award is divided into two categories: Mathematics e Scientific Disseminationwith a total of R$ 36,000 in prizes.

Created in 2018, the award is now in its 9th edition with the aim of encouraging the production of quality journalistic content that contributes to broadening society’s understanding of science. Journalists with work published between June 25, 2025 and June 19, 2026, in print, digital, television or radio outlets can participate. Entries are open until June 19.

The Mathematics category includes reports on academic advances, mathematics education and applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer graphics. The Science Communication category covers content on different areas of science, with a focus on the challenges and impacts of scientific production.

The evaluation criteria include journalistic relevance, originality, depth, clarity and quality of execution. Reports published in newspapers, magazines, websites, television, radio and podcasts are eligible.

In each category, R$10,000 will be awarded to first place, R$5,000 to second and R$3,000 to third, as well as honorable mentions.

The awards ceremony will be held in August in Rio de Janeiro, during the National Mathematics Festival. Aimed at the general public, the event is part of IMPA’s initiatives to spread mathematical knowledge through lectures, round tables, games and cultural activities.

Over the course of eight editions, the IMPA Journalism Award has received more than 1,200 entries from all over the country. In 2025, the winners were Luiz Felipe Fernandes Neves, with the article “The mathematical beauty of fractals”published in the Jornal UFG, in the Mathematics category, and Vinícius Sassine and Lalo de Almeida, with the article “Climate Change in the Amazon”from Folha de S. Paulo, published in the Science Communication category.
