EGMO 2024 starts this Thursday (11) in Georgia

The 13th edition of the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) began this Thursday (11) in the city of Tskaltubo, Georgia, and will run until April 17. The team that will represent Brazil in the international competition is made up of veterans Bilhana Plamenova Koshloukova (CE) and Isabela Ruthner Dorn (CE), and newcomers Luiza Akemi Bidoia de Freitas (SP) and Maria Clara Fontes Silva (SE). The group is led by Maria Clara de Lacerda Werneck (RJ) and vice-led by Vitória Aparecida Santos Ferreira (SP), who is a doctoral student at IMPA. All are medalists from OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools) .

"It's a great pleasure to accompany the Brazilian delegation at the 13th edition of the EGMO. It's a highly renowned olympiad, the biggest women's tournament we have in the area. It's also a great cultural exchange experience. My goal here is to give the girls on the team a little more confidence and at the same time reassure the parents who stayed in Brazil. I also have the role of assisting the team leader, Maria Clara Werneck, who is a friend," Vitória highlighted.

Last year, the Brazilian team, which included Bilhana and Isabela, finished the EGMO 2023 with two bronze medals and an honorable mention. These awards secured Brazil 27th place in the overall EGMO ranking, which includes more than 200 students from 56 countries. The competition took place in Slovenia. Bilhana and Isabela won bronze and an honorable mention, respectively.

On that occasion, the students highlighted how OBMEP contributed to their participation in various scientific competitions. “OBMEP was my first national olympiad, and it motivated me to study for other olympiads like the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad and the Girls in Mathematics Tournament. These experiences helped me deepen my studies in mathematics, and through them I was able to meet many people who work in this area, which motivates me to want to continue in this field,” said Bilhana.

The selection and training of the Brazilian delegation were promoted by the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad Association (AOBM). The EGMO is a mathematics competition similar to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). It was created in 2012 in the United Kingdom with the aim of encouraging the participation of girls in student mathematics olympiads. Brazil has participated in the competition since 2017, accumulating 1 gold medal, 4 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals. This edition of the competition had the participation of more than 200 students from 55 countries.
