Professor Eduardo Arbieto Alarcon of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) died of Covid-19 last Saturday (11). At 63 years old, the Peruvian mathematician worked at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME). According to the university, the professor sought medical attention, tested positive for the coronavirus and died four hours later.

In 1990, Eduardo completed his doctorate in mathematics at IMPA and, in 2014, his post-doctorate.

“He was my doctoral colleague, and he frequently visited IMPA to work on his research. It’s sad when friends leave us, especially so soon,” lamented the director-general of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.

The Peruvian mathematician joined UFG in 1998, where he was a full professor and worked in the area of analysis and partial differential equations. He also held the position of director of the Faculty of Rialma (GO) and coordinated the mathematics course in the same city. In addition, he was the coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME).

Considered a "tireless researcher," he had been away from UFG since the beginning of the year to supervise a doctoral thesis at the Inca Institute in Peru. This activity ended up being postponed due to the pandemic. In a statement, UFG offered its condolences to his family and friends.
