EBP starts on July 30th in São Paulo.

The week following the 34th Brazilian Mathematical Congress (CBM), IMPA and the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of São Paulo (IME-USP) will hold the 26th Brazilian School of Probability . The event will take place between July 30th and August 5th at the Armando de Salles Oliveira University City, USP.

The traditional international event, which has been held since 1997 at the initiative of the Brazilian probability community, represents an opportunity for interaction between researchers and students from Brazil and abroad, and has been taking place at a very high scientific level, with the participation of some of the world's best leaders.

This year, the EBP honors Antonio Galves – coordinator of the Research Support Center in Mathematics, Computing, Language and Brain (MaCLinC) at USP, and of the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center in Neuromathematics (Cepid NeuroMat), supported by FAPESP.

“Galves has a need that goes beyond 'doing science'; he tries to help the country move forward. He conceived NeuroMat and has always been concerned with training students. Furthermore, Galves played a very important role in probability, as he was one of the first to become interested in the area. He did his doctorate in France and, in the late 1970s, began studying particle systems, influencing almost all probabilists in Brazil who came after him,” explains Claudio Landim, deputy director of IMPA and member of the EBP organizing committee.

A full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, researcher Antonio Galves is also a professor at the University of São Paulo. The mathematician studies neural network modeling and learning phenomena; the brain's identification of patterns and the evolution of social networks, among other topics.

“Antonio Galves is a fundamental figure in the history of EBP and in the history of Brazilian probability in general. He is not only a leading researcher, but he has also managed to attract students and researchers to the area of Interacting Particle Systems. It is no coincidence that this is still one of the strongest areas of probability in the country. In recent years, he has led a major research project on mathematics and neuroscience. The two mini-courses this year address this connection,” commented Roberto Imbuzeiro, a researcher at IMPA who is also part of the event's organizing committee.

As in previous years, the 26th EBP will consist of five and a half days of mini-courses, plenary lectures, presentations, and poster sessions.

Among the researchers present are François Baccelli (INRIA Paris); Marzio Cassandro (Università di Roma, “La Sapienza”); Pierre Collet (École Polytechnique); Roberto Fernandez (New York University Shanghai); Pablo Ferrari (Universidad de Buenos Aires); Ricardo Fraiman (Universidad de la República); Florencia Leonardi (IME – Universidade de São Paulo); Mauro Piccioni (Università di Roma, “Sapienza”); Errico Presutti (Gran Sasso Science Institute) and Wojciech Szpankowski (Purdue University).
