Doctor from IMPA receives award from the President of Honduras.

With a solid international career, Honduran mathematician José Ramón Madrid, who holds a master's and doctorate in Mathematics from IMPA, has just been recognized by the President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, for his trajectory in science. He was awarded the "National Pride" category of the 2018 Youth Awards.
Born in the department of Santa Bárbara, José Ramón first distinguished himself at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) by winning two medals. In 2010, he moved to Brazil to begin his master's degree at IMPA under the guidance of Professor Emanuel Carneiro, while simultaneously pursuing a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Six years later, the Harmonic Analysis specialist left Brazil with his doctorate in hand, heading to Aalto University in Helsinki (Finland) to pursue postdoctoral studies.
A year later, he secured a position at ICTP in Trieste, Italy, where he also pursued postgraduate studies. He is currently the Hedrick Assistant Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, USA).
Recognition
Madrid explains that the Youth Awards have been presented by the Honduran government for four years, with the aim of recognizing eight young people from the country who have distinguished themselves in science, arts, or sports.
"I was nominated because of my career path and because I am considered a leading Honduran figure in Mathematics on an international level," he says.
Shy and reserved, he says it was an honor to receive this award.
