Conference pays tribute to the Director-General of IMPA.

At the International Conference on Dynamical Systems, IMPA's deputy director, Claudio Landim, paid tribute to the director-general, Marcelo Viana, highlighting the commitment and progress achieved by the institute, thanks to the work of the researcher who has been in charge of IMPA since 2016.

At the event, Landim cited important actions taken by the board aimed at bringing IMPA closer to society and referred to Viana as a determined person.

“Marcelo created the Pi Institute, which is proposing that IMPA invest in applied mathematics and make a better contribution to society. I am certain that the institute will make a great contribution to Brazil in the coming years, and this is thanks to Marcelo. I am sure that in 10 years we will be celebrating its 70th anniversary in a new building with many applied mathematicians in the audience. Thank you, Marcelo.”

Also participating in the opening of the conference were researchers José Ferreira Alves, Isabel Rio, and Stefano Luzzatto, who completed his doctorate under Viana's supervision and made a point of emphasizing his friend's career.

“Marcelo, where do you get your energy from? In terms of research, he needs no introduction. He has 60 publications. Four books. All absolutely fantastic and which have become references. But that wasn't enough; what I find even more incredible is his weekly column in Folha de São Paulo, one of the main newspapers in Brazil, every week with a new topic to explain mathematics in a popular way for people,” said Luzzatto.

The Dynamical Systems Conference is a traditional event promoted by IMPA. This year, there are 21 lectures, which also aim to celebrate Viana's 60th anniversary.

"We have been holding conferences on Dynamical Systems for many years. I remember very well the 1989 conference when I gave my first lecture, and it is a very particular and pleasant feeling that one of these conferences is taking the opportunity to celebrate my birthday and, above all, to maintain this tradition of dynamical systems at IMPA, which is a very noble tradition," said the director-general.

The conference began with medalist Field.

Fields Medalist in 2010, Russian researcher Stanislav Smirnov, from the University of Geneva, opened the lecture series on Monday morning.

The speaker addressed mathematical problems that seek to understand the formation of macroscopic structures from microscopic particles. Smirnov has been trying to prove one of the theorems on this subject for 15 years. He discussed with the audience new ideas that may explain, in the future, the formation of these systems with small particles.

Also participating in the event were researchers Luna Lomonaco (IMPA), who discussed the Mandelbrot Set, and Silvius Klein (PUC-Rio), who spoke about the stability under random noise of the Lyapunov exponents of certain dynamical systems.

Jiagang Yang, PhD from IMPA and current researcher at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), presented a paper on "maximum entropy measures," conducted in conjunction with Marcelo Viana. "We are trying to understand foliations through dynamical systems. We want to combine studies from different directions to build these connections between areas," commented the researcher.

To conclude the day, speaker Michael Benedicks, from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, gave a lecture on coexistence phenomena in two-dimensional maps.

The International Conference on Dynamical Systems takes place until Friday (28). Last week, IMPA promoted the “IMPA 70 Years Conference” which also included the participation of researchers from the institute, international names, as well as three Fields medalists: the Frenchman Hugo Duminil-Copin (University of Geneva), awarded in 2022 , the Russian Stanislav Smirnov (University of Geneva), laureate in 2010, and the Brazilian Artur Avila (IMPA and University of Zurich), the only Latin American to receive the honor in 2014.
