Luiz Velho is Computers & Graphics’ 4th most productive author
IMPA and Institute researcher Luiz Velho were featured internationally in an article celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Computers & Graphics journal, one of the oldest and most traditional in the field of Visual Computing. The study “Golden anniversary of Computers & Graphics: A bibliometric overview” brings together statistics that recognize the contributions that marked the journal’s anniversary. Since 2018, IMPA researcher Luiz Henrique Figueiredo has been a member of the journal’s editorial board, reinforcing the Brazilian institutional presence in its organization.
Among the main results, Velho appears as the 4th most productive author in the journal’s history. IMPA ranks 23rd among the 40 institutions with the greatest impact in terms of publications and citations, while Brazil ranks 8th among the most productive and influential countries in the field of Visual Computing.
“I’m very happy to have been quoted in the article commemorating the 50th anniversary of Computers & Graphics, which today can be considered one of the most important journals in the field. In particular, I feel gratified to have had the opportunity to contribute to the current success of this journal. I am even more pleased to see the importance of IMPA’s and Brazil’s participation in this process,” said Velho.
The survey shows that Computers & Graphics’ trajectory of growth and prestige is associated with profound editorial transformations that began in 2007, under the leadership of Portuguese researcher Joaquim Jorge. These include the creation of special editions with outstanding papers from the main international conferences, the strengthening of rigor in the submission and review process, the adoption of the reproducibility seal and the expansion of open and digital access options. These initiatives have contributed to a significant increase in the journal’s impact factor and its wide acceptance by the international scientific community. IMPA’s relationship with Computers & Graphics is strongly marked by the work of Visgraf (IMPA’s Computer Graphics Laboratory). The group has been continuously participating in the journal since the 1990s, with 28 published articles, 23 of which were co-authored with Velho. One of Visgraf’s first articles in the journal, published in 1996, came from the doctoral thesis of researcher Luiz Figueiredo, who was supervised by Jonas Gomes.
In addition to scientific production, Visgraf researchers have systematically contributed to the evaluation process of articles submitted to the journal by authors from different countries, which reflects the international recognition of Brazilian expertise in Visual Computing.
“It was a great pleasure to be invited to join the journal’s editorial board in 2018 and to collaborate directly with the selection of the journal’s content. Computers & Graphics has published special issues dedicated to the best computer graphics papers presented at SIBGRAPI, the largest international conference on visual computing organized in Brazil by the Brazilian Computer Society, in recognition of Brazil’s role in the field,” Figueiredo said.
Currently, five Brazilian researchers are part of the journal’s editorial board. In addition to Figueiredo, the group includes João Comba (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS), Hélio Lopes (PUC-Rio), Anderson Maciel (UFRGS) and Luciana Nedel (UFRGS). The award consolidates the position of IMPA and Brazil as protagonists in the international development of Visual Computing.
