Colloquium will feature a lecture on advancements in Ramsey's Theorem.

One of the topics that stirred the world of mathematics this year was Ramsey's Theorem, thanks to a group that worked together in the IMPA Summer Course. The greatest advance in 88 years in the field will be presented at the 34th Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium , which takes place from July 24th to 28th at the institute.

PhD from IMPA Marcelo Campos and PUC-Rio professor Simon Griffiths will give a lecture on advancing the upper limit for Ramsey's Theorem. The special lecture will take place on Wednesday (26) at 2:15 pm. The work was done in collaboration with IMPA researcher Robert Morris and Julian Sahasrabudhe, from Cambridge.

The mathematicians will discuss the history of the problem, how the old proof worked, and talk about the new ideas that allowed the development of the new algorithm capable of improving the theorem's bound. This advance is the most significant in the field since 1935.

“This will be a good opportunity for Brazilian students to fully understand the subject,” highlights Carolina Araujo, organizer of the Colloquium and researcher at IMPA. The lecture will be in Portuguese to facilitate comprehension of the topic.

This year's program features six international plenary speakers: Frederico Ardila ( University of San Francisco); Camillo De Lellis ( Institute for Advanced Study); Laura DeMarco ( Harvard University); Bernard Derrida ( Collège de France); Claudia Polini (University of Notre Dame); and Omri Sarig ( Weizmann Institute of Science), in addition to outreach lectures, roundtables, and introductory and advanced courses.
