Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium celebrates 60 years

The Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM), the most comprehensive scientific meeting of the Brazilian mathematical community, celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2017 with its 31st edition, from July 31st to August 4th, at the IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. Approximately 800 professionals and students are expected to attend.
Held biennially since 1957 without interruption, the Colloquium features internationally renowned Brazilian and foreign researchers, as well as undergraduate and graduate students from all over the country.
According to IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, the first CBM is considered "the founding act of Brazilian Mathematics." "It's not that nothing existed before, on the contrary. But it's fair to say that much of our mathematics originated and consolidated around the Colloquium. And it remains as important and alive today as it has always been in these 60 years of history," stated Viana.
According to Claudio Landim, the Colloquium is "without a doubt, the largest gathering of the Brazilian mathematical community." "Important mathematicians of international caliber will be attending. The longevity of the colloquium demonstrates the strength and growth of the Brazilian mathematical community. The presence of these foreign professionals is a great opportunity for many researchers to have contact with leading figures, whose lectures can influence their work, as has already happened on other occasions," said Landim.

The 31st CBM will feature 11 plenary lectures with internationally renowned researchers, including Fields Medal winner Artur Avila (IMPA); Luis A. Caffarelli (University of Texas-Austin); Lucia Caporaso (Università Roma Tre); Hugo Duminil-Copin (Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques); Ivar Ekeland (Université Paris-Dauphine); Michael Hutchins (University of California-Berkeley); Carlos Gustavo Moreira, aka Gugu (IMPA), among others ( see program ).
The introductory lectures will be “Counting Randomly,” by Robert Morris (IMPA), on August 2nd, and “Geometry and Arithmetic: a love story,” by Cecilia Salgado (UFRJ), on August 3rd, aimed at the general public. The Colloquium will also feature the round table “Mathematics: A feminine noun – Challenges and perspectives on the issue of gender,” organized by Carolina Araujo, on August 2nd.
Over the five days, multiple activities will also be offered, such as introductory and advanced courses on current and relevant topics highlighting figures in world mathematics. Thematic sessions will feature in-depth lectures on a wide variety of subjects, fostering discussions and information exchange among participants. Activities will always begin at 9:00 AM, Monday through Friday (July 31 to August 4), extending until 7:00 PM. The opening ceremony will be at 6:30 PM on Monday (July 31).
Mathematics Biennium
The 31st Brazilian Mathematical Congress (CBM) is part of the activities of the 2017-2018 Gomes Souza Mathematics Biennium, a tribute to one of the pioneers of mathematical research in Brazil, the politician from Maranhão, Joaquim Gomes de Souza (1829-1864), popularly known as Souzinha. The Biennium represents an important stimulus to scientific exchange, attracting leading figures in international mathematics to Brazil. It is also an opportunity to publicize the significant results achieved by Brazilian mathematics.
In addition to supporting the development of existing projects, the Biennium encourages the emergence of new research and programs. With the aim of disseminating Mathematics, IMPA organizes a series of activities – seminars, workshops and festivals, among other initiatives – throughout 2017 and 2018, targeting society, school and university environments, and the scientific community.
