Brazil wins gold at the Portuguese Language Countries Olympics.

The Brazilian team achieved the highest score among four countries in the Mathematics Olympiad of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (OMCPLP), held this week in Nova Friburgo, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.

Two Brazilian students won the gold medal, Rodrigo Salgado Domingo Porto, from Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Pedro de Oliveira Lengruber Lack, from Nova Friburgo (RJ), and received the awards on the awards night, this Thursday (07). The Brazilian team, led by professors Fabio Brochero Martínez (MG) and Rafael Kazuhiro Miyazaki (SP), also took two silver medals. Davi Gabriel Bandeira and Caio Hermano Maia, from Fortaleza (CE), alongside the Portuguese Pedro Alves Antunes and Leandro Marques Tavares.

The Bayesian perspective on artificial intelligence

Organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the Olympiad also included students from Cape Verde and Mozambique. In the competition, students up to 18 years old from the four countries had to solve six problems on November 5th and 6th.

In a video shown to the students, the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, who was in Canada , thanked the organizers for their efforts and congratulated the competitors. In addition to him, Professor Diego Eloi Misquita, from the Federal Institute of Ceará and a member of the 9th OMCPLP, the Consul-General of the Republic of Cape Verde, Pedro Antônio dos Santos, Brazilian professors, and the Portuguese professor, Daniel Marques Pinto, also presented to the audience.

The OMCPLP has been held since 2011 and aims to stimulate the study of Mathematics and scientific research among Portuguese-speaking countries. Brazil has participated in all editions and hosted the competition for the third time – previously in Salvador (BA) and Fortaleza (CE). The national team has already accumulated 36 medals.
