Brazil ranks 1st in the Ibero-American University Competition.

The Brazilian team finished first in the overall team standings at the 10th edition of the Ibero-American Inter-University Mathematics Championship, after winning two gold and two silver medals. The tournament, held in Santa Marta, Colombia, ended last Saturday (6).

George Lucas Diniz Alencar (CE) and Andrey Jhen Shan Chen (SP) won gold medals, after scoring 40 and 39 points respectively. Students Thiago Landim de Souza Leão (PE) and Thiago Ribeiro Tergolino (RJ) won silver medals, after scoring 32 and 23 points each. Professor Matheus Secco (RJ) was the team leader.

The competition brought together 53 university students from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. Organized since 2009, the Ibero-American Inter-University Mathematics Competition aims to encourage the study of mathematics and academic excellence to improve scientific capacity and contribute to the social, cultural, and economic development of the participating countries.

Brazil has participated in the event since its first edition and has accumulated 28 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze medals to date. The host city for the 2019 tournament has not yet been determined.
