Award-winning book on Geometric Algebra is the topic of a lecture.

The book that won the 2021 Elon Lages Lima Prize , “Geometric Algebra and Applications”, will be the subject of a lecture given by one of the authors, Leandro Augusto Frata Fernandes, during the IMPA Computer Graphics Seminar. The researcher from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) will present initial notions of algebra and directions for its application in research. The broadcast will be live this Wednesday (22), at 1:30 pm, on the Visgraf YouTube channel (IMPA Computer Graphics Laboratory). “The beauty and power of geometric algebra are related to its ability to unify, simplify, and generalize various mathematical objects that involve geometric concepts. For example, vectors, complex numbers, quaternions, tensors, and differential forms can all be viewed in an integrated way. It can also serve as a single language for physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, facilitating the definition and understanding of problems that arise in these areas,” explained Leandro Fernandes.

Released in 2017, the book "Geometric Algebra and Applications" was written by a professor at UFF and also by mathematicians Carlile Lavor, from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), and Manuel Menezes de Oliveira Neto, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul ( UFRGS). In addition to the book, the researchers' work resulted in a tutorial presented at SIBGRAPI 2009 (Conference on Graphics, Patterns and Images) and a summer course at IMPA in 2010. Now, the material is used as a basis for "Introduction to Geometric Algebra" classes in the Postgraduate Program in Computer Science at UFF.
Leandro Fernandes points out that this is a field of algebra that is not widely known, especially in Brazil. Writers have been working to organize national events to expand knowledge in this area. "I believe that the Elon Lages Lima Prize will greatly help in this work of disseminating geometric algebra nationwide," says the researcher.
