Artur Avila's lecture celebrates the memory of Welington de Melo.

The mathematician Welington de Melo will be honored at the 31st Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM) . Considered the largest gathering of the Brazilian mathematical community, the event will be held at the IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, from July 31st to August 4th.

In 2017, the Colloquium celebrates its 60th anniversary and is expected to attract around 800 people, including renowned Brazilian and foreign researchers, as well as undergraduate and graduate students from all over the country.

The tribute to Melo will take place on August 1st, at 3 pm, during a lecture by Fields Medalist Artur Avila, in the Ricardo Mañé auditorium.

Sailor mathematician

 Much loved by different generations of mathematicians, Welington was known and respected for his academic rigor and scientific productivity. He had worked at IMPA since 1970 and was Artur Avila's advisor.

Besides mathematics, his passions included the sea and sailing. He was a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) since 1991. He received the National Order of Scientific Merit in the degrees of Commander and Grand Cross, and the TWAS Prize (Academy of Sciences for the Developing World). He would later become a member of TWAS.

Welington died at the age of 70, shortly after celebrating his birthday at the international conference on "New Trends in One-Dimensional Dynamics," held by IMPA, which included among its participants the American and also Fields Medalist (1966) Steve Smale.
