IMPA's outstanding researcher and winner of the Fields Medal in 2014, Artur Avila, is the honoree of the 2019 edition of the Fields Medal Symposium (FMS), in Toronto, Canada. IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, presented Avila and his work this Monday (4), at the opening of the event, in front of 400 people.
In presenting “Renormalization – The work of Artur Avila”, Viana reinforced the importance of disseminating the work of the “remarkable mathematician, capable of bringing the resolution of the most difficult problems closer”. “It is a privilege for me to participate in the Fields Institute symposium, presenting Artur's work to the Toronto audience. This initiative of the Fields Institute allows the local community to learn firsthand about the work of the best mathematicians, and it is a model that we can and should follow in Brazil,” stated the Director-General of IMPA.

Following this, Artur Avila led the ceremony with the presentation “Dealing with Chaos.” Also a researcher at the University of Zurich (Switzerland), the mathematician specializing in dynamical systems invited the audience to reflect on the transformations in the field in recent years and how the topic relates to everyday life. By tradition, the opening of the Fields Medal Symposium is an open outreach lecture, aimed at attracting the general public to learn, interact, and be inspired by the stars of Mathematics.
The opening ceremony of the FMS was attended by Ambassador Ana Lélia Benincá Beltrame, Consul General of Brazil in Toronto, the President of the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering of Canada, Alejandro Adem and the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Toronto, Vivek Goel.
