Artur Avila gives a lecture at the 'Brazil-France Meeting'.

Around 160 mathematicians attended the lecture by researcher Artur Avila (IMPA/Universität Zürich) on “Renormalization of one-frequency cocycles with values on compact Lie groups”, this Monday (15), in the Ricardo Mañé auditorium.

Avila, winner of the 2014 Fields Medal and an extraordinary researcher at IMPA, discussed aspects of the work developed in partnership with the French mathematician Raphaël Krikorian.

“It was very impressive. It’s a weighty, important mathematical idea, and he made very original use of it, presenting recent discussions, which demonstrates an up-to-date understanding of the topic,” commented Jacob Palis, emeritus researcher at IMPA.

The presentation is part of the program for the “1st Joint Meeting Brazil-France in Mathematics”, which takes place at IMPA until Friday the 19th of this week. The event brings together researchers from both countries to discuss cutting-edge topics in Mathematics.

Professor Marcel Vinhas Bertolini, from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), came to Rio to participate in the meeting.

"Avila works with a topic I only encountered briefly during my graduate studies. I can superficially understand what he's talking about, but not the details. In any case, it's very good to be here precisely to learn what types of research are being developed in the area. Coming from someone so well-positioned, it's extremely important," said Bertolini.
