Artur Avila closes the Dynamical Systems Conference.

IMPA's extraordinary researcher and winner of the Fields Medal in 2014, Artur Avila, closed the International Conference on Dynamical Systems this Friday (28). The researcher thanked the opportunity to participate in three lectures over the last two weeks and described the event as memorable.

"It has been a memorable week, an old-fashioned congress, with the 'flavor' of the usual IMPA experience that we know and enjoy, with the interactions that IMPA provides, and I hope there will be many more. Thank you, Marcelo, for this opportunity."

The researcher concluded the lecture series by addressing the "Newhouse Phenomenon in the complex Hénon family and homoclinic bifurcations".

Avila presented new findings from the studies: that a complex Newhouse phenomenon exists after any complex bifurcation. This is a theory known in real-world cases that has been extended to complex cases.

IMPA researcher Carlos Gustavo Moreira, who was once Avila's professor, explained that he had exchanged some ideas with the researcher on the subject.

"This was known in real-world cases, very influential in the movement of dynamical systems, established in the 1970s in three very famous works by Newhouse, and now this theory is being extended."

Avila also participated in the IMPA's 70th Anniversary Conference, which took place last week.

Students from various universities such as UFF, PUC, UFMG, among others, participated in the conference which took place from Monday (21) to Friday (28). In total, there were 21 lectures with national and international names in the field.

Doctoral students celebrated their week of immersion in dynamical systems.

“The lectures involving Lyapunov's leading figures are the ones that interest me the most, as it's the topic I work on. I particularly enjoyed Karina Marín's presentation. It's great to see a woman in mathematics giving a lecture. She's a role model,” said student Patrícia Melo, from PUC.

Marcelo Duran, who always participates in IMPA's colloquia, highlighted that each event provides an opportunity to improve knowledge in the field.

“Now that I’m a bit more advanced, I can follow the lectures better. Usually, the topics are advanced and it’s not always possible to keep up well, but as you delve deeper into the studies, you understand more, which adds a lot to our knowledge.”

Also participating in the conference on Friday were researchers Dmitry Dolgopyat (Maryland), Rafael Potrie (CMAT) and Federico Rodriguez-Hertz (Penn State).
