Articles highlight IMPA's role in the country's development.
Occupying a prominent position on the international stage, IMPA is recognized as an important initiative for the development of mathematics in the articles“Institutional Agency in the Promotion of Research and Teaching Initiatives: The Case of IMPA and the Area of Mathematics in Brazil” and “Coevolution between institutions and scientific organizations: The case of IMPA” . The works were developed by researchers Renata Petrin (UFMG) and Roberto Gonzalez Duarte (UFMG), with support from Irene Kazumi Miura (USP).
Based on documents, videos, and interviews, the studies address IMPA's contribution to scientific research and development in the country. The idea is to assess the importance of public institutes for the advancement of a field of knowledge.
“To ensure the development of the institute and of mathematics, IMPA researchers have played an active role in different spheres of society, such as in politics and communication, educational systems, and productive sectors. IMPA's trajectory can be used to guide future actions and decision-making processes of the institute and other teaching and research institutions,” commented the author.

Renata Petrin began developing her studies during her doctoral studies in administration at UFMG, under the guidance of Duarte. Her interest arose from questioning what she describes as the "paradox of the development of mathematics." The researchers decided to investigate why Brazil is a reference point in the international field, despite the low investment in research and development.
"In other words, even with the government and society initially opposed to mathematics, low investment in R&D, and problems in basic education, IMPA researchers were able to explore opportunities in the environment and overcome restrictions through their political and social skills when interacting with regulatory and scientific institutions and with society," said Renata.

The articles highlight actions taken since the institute's creation that have consolidated IMPA's current prestigious position. These include scientific exchanges and meetings that have enabled the production of mathematical knowledge in Brazil; interaction between IMPA members and national universities, resulting in the creation of mathematics research centers in the country; the Summer Program and PAPMEM, which have allowed the sharing of knowledge produced at the institute with professors from other higher education and basic education institutions; the creation of OBMEP, which has motivated students to study mathematics, in addition to numerous other actions.
